Eigenschaften

Canes Venatici befindet sich südlich der Deichsel des Großen Wagens. Es enthält eine Reihe lichtschwacher Sterne, von denen lediglich die beiden hellsten mit bloßem Auge gut sichtbar sind. Das Sternbild enthält dafür zahlreiche Galaxien, welche zu einem gigantischen Haufen gehören, der sich von Ursa Maior über Coma Berenices bis hinunter zur Virgo erstreckt. Die Fläche dieses Sternbilds beträgt 465 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert um Mitternacht jeweils etwa am 7. April. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Das Sternbild wurde 1690 von dem Danziger Astronomen Johannes Hevelius in seinem Werk Prodromus astronomiae eingeführt. Jahrhundertelang galt es als ein Teil von Ursa Maior. Es stellt die beiden Hunde Asterion und Chara des Bärenhüters dar, die den Bären rund um den Himmelspol treiben. [7, 51]

Der hellere der beiden markanten Sterne heißt Cor Caroli (Herz des Karl). Der Volkskunde zufolge wurde der Stern von Edmund Halley zu Ehren von König Charles II von England benannt wurde. Man sagt, der Stern soll am Abend der Rückkehr des Königs nach London im Mai 1660 besonders prächtig gefunkelt haben. Andere wiederum behaupten, dass der ursprüngliche Name Cor Caroli Regis Martyris war, zu Ehren von Charles I, welcher viele Jahre zuvor hingerichtet wurde. [88]
