Reflection Nebula vdB 24 + Dark Cloud LDN 1442
History
In 1962 Beverly T. Lynds published a compilation of 1802 nebula in her «Catalogue of Dark Nebulae» that she found on photo plates of the «National Geographic Palomar Observatory Sky Atlas». The dark nebula with centre east of XY Persei is listed there with the designation LDN 1442 and an area 0.316 square degrees. [473]
The reflection nebula west of XY Persei was discovered by the Canadian astronomer Sidney van den Bergh on the photographic plates of the «Palomar Observatory Sky Survey» and published as 24th object (vdB 24) in 1966 in his «Catalogue of Reflection Nebulae». He noted: «RW Aur Variable XY Per. Comet tail nebula?» [255]
Physical Properties
XY Persei is a variable star and visual binary system with a Herbig Ae primary (9.43 vMag) and a B6Ve secondary (10.14 vMag) separated by 1.4". [752] VdB 24 is a reflection nebula, illuminated by this binary star, likely the same interstellar dust cloud LDN 1442.
