Eigenschaften

Das Sternbild besteht aus zwei durch Ophiuchus getrennte Teilbereiche. Im Westen liegt der auffälligere Teil Serpentis Caput und im Osten Serpentis Cauda. Beide Teile liegen südlich von Hercules, bzw. Corona Borealis. Den Kopf der Schlange bildet ein kleines gleichseitiges Dreieck am nördlichen Ende einer leichten Wellenlinie, die den Körper symbolisert. Die gesamte Fläche der beiden Teilsternbilder beträgt 637 Quadratgrad. Der Schlangenkopf kulminiert jeweils etwa am 17. Mai um Mitternacht und der Schlangenschwanz etwa am 21. Juni. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Serpens (Caput) und Serpens (Cauda) ist ein altes Sternbild, das eine Schlange darstellt, die sich um den Körper des Schlangenträgers gewunden hat. Nach der griechischen Mythologie soll die Schlange dem Asklepios (der im Schlangenträger symbolisiert ist) ein Wunderkraut gebracht haben, das Kranke heilt und Tote wiedererweckt. [10]

Schlangen wurden schon lange als Quelle der Heilerei angesehen - ein Konzept, das regelmäßig ein führender Lehrsatz der medizinischen Quacksalberei in Form von "Schlangenöl-Elixieren" und ähnlichem war. Andererseits wurde Asklepios' Schlange zum Caduceus, dem universellen Emblem der Medizin mit den ein oder zwei Schlangen, die sich um einen Stab winden.

Die korrekte lateinische Schreibweise der beiden Teilsternbilder ohne Klammern ist Serpentis Caput (Kopf der Schlange) und Serpentis Cauda (Schwanz der Schlange), meistens wird jedoch nicht darauf geachtet. [221]
