Sternbild Libra (Waage)

Eigenschaften
Libra ist ein kleines, weniger auffälliges Ekliptiksternbild und liegt westlich von der markanten Sternformation um Antares. Man kann sich in den Sternen gut die vorgestreckten Scheren des schönen Sommersternbilds Skorpion vorstellen. Mit etwas mehr Phantasie erkennt man auch eine Balkenwaage. Die Fläche des Sternbilds beträgt 538 Quadratgrad und das Zentrum kulminiert jeweils etwa am 9. Mai um Mitternacht. [9, 15]

Mythologie und Geschichte

Die Griechen des Altertums zählten die Gegend, wo sich heute das Sternbild Libra befindet, noch zu Scorpius und sahen hier die Scheren des Skorpions. Daher stammen auch noch die arabischen Sternnamen. Zu Lebzeiten Julius Cäsars trennten die Römer in diesen Bereich ab und bildeten das eigenständige Sternbild und Tierkreiszeichen Libra. Dies gescha zu Ehren Julius Cäsars wegen seiner Verdienste um die Reform des römischen Kalenders und seiner sprichwörtlichen Gerechtigkeit. Die Waage wird als Symbol der Rechtssprechung angesehen und von Astraea, der Göttin des Rechts, hochgehalten wird. Eine Sage bringt Astraea mit dem benachbarten Sternbild Virgo in Verbindung.
