Geschichte

Am 7. September 1784 entdeckte Wilhelm Herschel einen «schwachen Nebel», den er als II 207 notierte und festhielt: «Beträchtlich groß, rund, allmählich in der Mitte viel heller, leicht auflösbar.» [463] John Herschel machte eine einzige Beobachtung, maß eine genaue Position, notierte den Nebel als h 2149 und vermerkte: «hell; rund; 30"; allmählich heller in der Mitte.» [466] Das Team des Birr Castle beobachtete den Nebel 14-mal mit dem riesigen 72-Zoll-Teleskop und notierte am 16. September 1854: «Es kann kaum Zweifel daran geben, dass dieser Nebel ein Haufen ist.» [486]

Physikalische Eigenschaften

Es handelt sich um eine Galaxie des morphologischen Typs (R)SA(r)ab mit einem LINER-Typ aktiven Kern. Distanzangaben reichen von 16 Mpc bis 18.4 Mpc. [145]
