Galaxies NGC 1035, NGC 1042, NGC 1047, NGC 1052

History

On 10 January 1785 William Herschel discovered a «bright nebula» which he added as object I 63 (NGC 1052) to his «Catalogue of One Thousand new Nebulae and Clusters of Stars» with the notes: «Bright, round, much brighter in the middle, 1' diameter.» In the same night he also found NGC 1035 which he added as II 284 with the notes: «Faint, much extended, about 3' long and 3/4' broad.» [463]

The galaxies NGC 1042 and NGC 1047 were discovered by Lewis Swift on 10 November 1885 using the 16 inch Clark refractor at Warner Observatory. [277]
